Loosely allied with the Emerald Enclave, Krang-Fang was responding to a general call for assistance against a Werewolf infestation along the Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms. He vanished a few days before Imish while tracking one of the beasts in a hazy foggy morning.
Hailing from the same general area of the Sword Coast, Imish was also assisting the Emerald Enclave with the Werewolves when during a late night hunt, he vanished in the midst of a heavy fog.
Hailing from a misty, wet, northern island realm somewhere on the Prime Material Plane, Lasarina was enjoying the company and warm fire of a village Tavern. Suddenly an outlanding stranger arrived and sought out the help of the local village cleric… one known to channel the powers of the God of the Forge.
The Cleric left immediately to see if she could be of assistance and vanished just west of the village in a heavy fog.
Some books should not be read. Some spells found in mysterious books should not be researched and especially not cast… sometimes curious Wizards with a powerful personal need make bad decisions and vanish in a magical fog.
The First Day Together
After coming west along the mysterious road and past the giant gate, the heroes meet up in the heart of a drab and disturbing village in the only Inn with any inkling of hospitality. There Imish, Lasarina, and Ellathan meet up with Krang-Fang, who had already spent a stressful day more than they in this unpleasant land.
After a meal and drinks (and quiet discussion together), they encounter one of the Owner/Tavern Wenches of the Blood O' The Vine – Alenka. Feeling that they need to visit the Burgomaster that wrote the letter, the heroes set out.
At the door, they encounter a young drunkard who had been drinking within the Inn – he introduces himself as Ismark
Ismark, Son of the Burgomaster
Directly he confirms that the letter is a forgery for he knows the person who allegedly wrote it – his father. And the handwriting is not his father's. However, he agrees to take the strangers to him so they can see for themselves.
Clearly dealing with matters of his own, nevertheless Ismark goes with the "strangers" as they walk around the village of Barovia … quickly growing frustrated with the omnipresent depression and hints of violent terror.
At last, arriving at the Burgomaster's fire and claw scarred home they discover two others – the girl Ireena mentioned in the letter – with two bite marks upon her neck… and the corpse of the Burgomaster, dead several days.
Burying a Father and Dispatching a Son
It becomes clear that "The Devil Strahd" has his eyes on Ireena and the brother wishes to get her away to safety in another town… but she refuses to go while their father goes unburied. Now with the arrival of The Strangers, they may have enough power to bury the father and survive the act.
They head to the battered and nearly ruined church just outside town… and begin the process of a burial. Much to the surprise of Krang-Fang and Imish, they see the Church is dedicated to a very familiar God indeed… The Morning Lord… who in their Realm is known as Lathander. Lathander buries in the morning so they must prep the body… it was during these preparations that a scream is heard.
Then followed the horrible story of a son, taken by a Vampire to torture a father… Donavich the Priest. Donavich's shame is that, because he yet loves his son, he cannot bring himself to send his own flesh and blood to the afterlife. Instead, he has hidden his monsterous boy below the church.
The Strangers agree to do what should have been done long before… destroy the vampire. They go below the Church and engage the creature in battle and send the boy Donu's soul on to whatever rest exists in Ravenloft.
They now await the night and whatever it might bring…
From an administrative point of view, this session concluded the "introduce all the characters to each other and the setting" part of the campaign.
- Krang-Fang – Dwarf Druid
- Imish – Half-Orc Barbarian
- Lasarina – Human Cleric
- Ellathan – Half-Elf Wizard
The party received XP for the vampire spawn, but it was not enough to take them from 3rd to 4th, there was no treasure in that pitiful cellar.
